Gold-plated Patens

( number of products: 5 )

Gold-plated paten, together with a chalice, is a sacred vessel used in Christian liturgical ceremonies during the Eucharist. Most of our patens have a simple design with a smooth gold surface or a little pattern around the edge. They follow the centuries-long liturgical tradition.

Eucharistic patens are made from precious materials with 24-carat gold plating on top. The gold symbolises purity and reverence. In Western rites, they are placed on the altar atop the corporal alongside chalices. The metal surface is smooth and even, so the priest can easily collect any fragments of the Communion bread that might break off.

Eucharistic Patens

Gold-plated patens have been used in Christian worship since the earliest days of the Church. Archaeological findings show that early vessels were large, as they needed to hold bread for the entire congregation. Over time, as communion practices evolved, liturgical patens became smaller and more refined.

Modern Eucharistic patens are about 15 cm across. Just like with our chalices, we make sure they follow church rules about using suitable materials for anything that touches the Eucharist. They hold the unconsecrated bread during the offertory and the consecrated host after transubstantiation. The paten catches any fragments or crumbs before they fall to the ground to ensure proper respect for the Body of Our Lord.

Many parishes get a matching chalice and a paten as a set. We can engrave them with biblical quotes or an inscription.
